Boulder

Selling a coin collection in Boulder

Gold reached Boulder County early. Prospectors struck it at Gold Hill, in the mountains west of town, in January 1859, during the same Pikes Peak rush that gave rise to Denver. Mining camps like Gold Hill, Ward and Jamestown sent men down Boulder Canyon for supplies, and Boulder grew up as their town on the plains. Pre-1933 gold still comes out of old Boulder houses, often $2.50 and $5 pieces kept in a small coin purse or a jewelry box.

The University of Colorado was founded here in 1876, the year Colorado became a state, and the city has drawn professors, scientists and engineers ever since. Their collections are often tidy. We see albums filled in by date and mint mark, notebooks recording what was paid for each coin, and PCGS and NGC slabs bought one at a time over many years. Graded coins are priced on current collector demand for that exact coin and grade, and a well kept record helps us match each slab to its history.

The older Boulder estates are in Mapleton Hill, Whittier and the blocks around the Pearl Street Mall, where brick and frame houses date to the late 1800s and early 1900s. Those houses give up the oldest material we handle: Indian Head cents, large-size notes printed before 1929, silver certificates and the occasional National Bank Note. Notes issued by Colorado banks draw regional collectors, so we look at each one for the bank name, the condition and the serial number before pricing it.

Plenty of Boulder sellers are downsizing out of a house below the Flatirons or up near Chautauqua after decades in it, and they want a clear picture before anything leaves the family. Our written list puts every coin on its own line, with collector coins separated from melt coins. It costs nothing to get one, and you can compare it with a coin show or an auction house quote at your own pace.

You settle the meeting arrangements for your Boulder appointment when you book, and for a big collection or a full estate you can ask about a home visit. Every coin is checked for date, mint mark, grade and eye appeal while you watch, and gold and silver are confirmed without acid or scratching. Sellers should have a government-issued photo ID with them.

Questions

Selling coins and gold in Boulder

My father taught at CU and kept detailed records of his coins. Should I bring them?

Please do. Receipts, inventory notebooks and old price lists help us match each coin to what he bought, although we price from the coins themselves and today's demand. Keep everything in its original holders or albums, and do not clean any of it.

We have slabs from a Boulder estate. Do you buy PCGS and NGC coins?

Yes. Coins in PCGS and NGC holders are priced on the grade on the slab and on current collector demand for that coin. We still look at eye appeal and the condition of the holder, and each slab gets its own line on your written offer.

Do you meet sellers in Boulder or only in Denver?

We serve Boulder sellers by appointment, and where we meet is decided when you book. If the collection fills more than a box or two, or you are settling an estate, ask about a home visit. Call 303-401-0104 to set it up.
