Golden

Selling coins and gold in an old mining town

Golden began as a supply town in 1859, where miners stocked up before heading up Clear Creek Canyon to the gold diggings in the mountains. It served as the capital of Colorado Territory in the 1860s before Denver took the title for good. The town kept its working character, with the Coors brewery on Clear Creek and the brick blocks of Washington Avenue still at its center. Clear Creek runs right through downtown, with a path along its banks.

The Colorado School of Mines opened here in 1874 and has trained mining engineers, geologists and metallurgists ever since. Plenty of its graduates spent careers overseas in mines and oil fields, and the coins they carried home can show up in Golden estates: British Sovereigns, South African Krugerrands, Mexican silver and gold, Canadian Maple Leafs and handfuls of change from a dozen countries. A Krugerrand holds one troy oz of gold in a 22K coin, and the Sovereign is 22K as well. Foreign coins struck in base metal usually bring little, and we tell you that up front.

A town with this many engineers and geologists has its share of bullion buyers. Gold Buffalos, Gold Eagles, Silver Eagles and poured silver bars come out of Golden safes, and many owners can quote the purity of every piece. That suits us. We confirm the metal with non-destructive testing, weigh each bar and coin on a calibrated scale, and tie the offer to the live spot price, so the numbers are easy to check. Bars stamped by a known refiner with weight and purity are the simplest to price.

Pre-1933 U.S. gold comes up as well, often from a parent's safe deposit box. Double eagles, eagles, half eagles and quarter eagles are 90% gold, and their dates and mint marks matter. A D on a gold coin from 1838 to 1861 stands for Dahlonega, Georgia, a Mint that struck only gold. From 1906 on, D stands for Denver. We check every gold coin for collector demand before anything is priced as metal.

Appointments are private and one-on-one, and the meeting place in or near Golden is set when you book. A larger collection can ask about a home visit, whether you live near the Mines campus or up toward Lookout Mountain. Bring a photo ID to sell, and you are paid the same visit if you accept.

Questions

Selling coins and gold in Golden

My father worked overseas after Mines. Do you buy foreign coins?

Yes. Gold and silver world coins like Sovereigns, Krugerrands, Maple Leafs and older Mexican silver are priced on metal content and any collector demand. Base-metal pocket change from abroad is usually worth little, and we will tell you so. Each coin we buy is listed on your written offer.

How do you test gold bars and coins without damaging them?

We use non-destructive testing, so there is no acid and no scratching. Every piece goes on a calibrated scale in front of you and is checked against the known weight and purity for that coin or bar. The offer is then tied to the live spot price.

What does a D mean on an old gold coin?

It depends on the date. On gold coins from 1838 to 1861, D stands for the Dahlonega Mint in Georgia. From 1906 on, D means Denver. Both kinds draw collectors, so we check date, mint mark and grade before pricing any gold coin as metal.
