Lakewood

Federal Center savers and Lakewood bullion

Lakewood became a city in 1969, but its neighborhoods were filling up long before that. Ranch houses and split-levels spread along Wadsworth Boulevard, Kipling Street and Union Boulevard after World War II, and many of the people who bought them worked at the Denver Federal Center near Sixth Avenue and Kipling. The Federal Center began as an ammunition plant during the war and later became home to a long list of federal agencies.

Many of those households saved steadily, and their estates often show it. We see American Silver Eagles bought one or two a year since 1986, gold Eagles and Buffalos, 10 oz silver bars and tubes of Canadian Maple Leafs. Each Silver Eagle holds one troy oz of .999 silver, and the one ounce Gold Eagle holds a full troy oz of gold in a 22K coin. Bullion is priced on weight, purity and the live spot price, and you watch every piece go on the calibrated scale. Proof Silver Eagles in their Mint boxes and coins in PCGS or NGC holders are priced separately, since collectors may pay more for them.

Older silver comes out of the same houses. Rolls of pre-1965 quarters and dimes, Kennedy halves from the 40% silver years and jars of war nickels were common ways to put money aside once silver coins started disappearing from change. We sort those rolls before pricing them, since a few dates and mint marks are worth more to collectors than the silver they hold.

Belmar has changed how a lot of Lakewood retirees live. It was built on the site of an old shopping mall, and the condos and apartments near it draw people moving out of larger houses on Green Mountain and in east Lakewood's older neighborhoods. When a move like that is coming, a coin collection is easier to deal with early, while there is still time to compare offers and talk it over with family. If gold jewelry is part of the move too, we can sort it by karat and weigh it at the same appointment.

Appointments are private and one-on-one, set at a place agreed when you book. A large estate can ask about a home visit. Bring a government-issued photo ID to sell. If you accept, you are paid the same visit by cash, check or wire for larger sales.

Questions

Selling coins and gold in Lakewood

How do you price Silver Eagles a parent bought every year?

Most Silver Eagles are priced on their one troy oz of .999 silver and the live spot price. Proof issues in original boxes, and coins in PCGS or NGC holders, can bring more from collectors. We list each group separately on the written offer so you can see the difference.

I'm moving from Green Mountain to a condo near Belmar. Should I sell my coins first?

That is your call, but it often helps to know what they are worth before the move. A free evaluation gives you a written, item-by-item offer. You can sell then, sell part of it, or pack it all and keep the list for later.

Can you meet me in Lakewood?

We settle the meeting place with you when you book, because we work by appointment only. Larger collections and estates can ask about a home visit. Each appointment is one-on-one, with your coins checked while you watch.
